For the record, I’d like to add that while what Imus said was horrible, it would have been a non-story if it had been said by a hip-hop star. Double standard? You be the judge.
And one more thing: The interesting part is that so many people seem to be fixated on the black-vs.-white aspect of this. I think a more interesting angle is that Imus, and many people, think female athletes are butch. Prior to his “nappy-headed hoes” statement, he called them “rough” and “tattooed.”
I think it’s disrespectful to think that women who play sports, especially intensely physical sports, aren’t ladylike. I should hope that my niece, no matter what she decides to do, can still be considered feminine. The horrible thing here isn’t just the racism, it’s the misogyny.
