A lot of chatter has been raised in sci fi geek circles about whether the Battlestar Galactica could beat the Enterprise. I say, as with most things, it depends. For this comparison, I’m going to use the Enterprise D instead of the original, or the piece of crap that Archer drove.
If the Enterprise could get the jump on the Galactica, or if they were standing toe-to-toe when the fighting started, the Enterprise would probably win. It’s got more raw firepower, and the crew of the Galactica wouldn’t have time to adapt their strategy for this new foe.
However, in all other instances the Galactica would mop the floor with the Enterprise. Adama is twice the battle commander that Picard ever was, if only because he can leave the diplomatic stuff to President Roslin. He’s also got a crew that’s prepared only for battle. No scientists or engineers clogging the tubes, as it were.
The way I see it panning out is the Enterprise would deliver an opening salvo and Adama would do a random jump, somewhere outside of the long-range sensors of the Enterprise. The Galactica has the advantage that it can instantaneously leap from point to point, whereas the Enterprise has to cover that whole distance. The Galactica, either in one big jump or a series of smaller jumps, would find a position where it would have the upper hand. An asteroid belt, for example, would limit the maneuverability and sensor advantages that the Enterprise has, and would enhance the ability of Galactica’s Vipers and Raptors to gather information on the Enterprise.
I think the killer blow would come from jumping an empty Raptor into the warp core or one of the nacelles or magnetic anti-matter containement units of the Enterprise. This would be entirely possible because the jump technology from Galactica has already been shown to be able to jump into solid objects, so jumping through shields would be no problem. The stream of antimatter colliding with the normal matter of the Raptor would be more than enough to destroy the Enterprise, at little cost to the Galactica.
And this maneuver wouldn’t be difficult for Adama to think up, since he’s done crazier things, like jumping a capital ship into the atmosphere of a planet to launch close air support Vipers.
End geek out.
