Alton Brown Broke my Heart

AB’s got a few videos on GE’s site about their fancy-pants, super-expensive appliances. Having watched the one on the Trivection ovens, I don’t think I can stomach any more. He broke my heart about 3/4 of the way through.

He said he liked electric stoves. Not just any electric stoves, but those stupid glass top ones. The ones you have to scrub with polish to get the food off of. I have one of these stoves and, despite what The Master says, they are not better than gas! It takes at least twice as long to boil water on it. Why? Gas stoves have flames that are about 3000 degrees. Electric stoves can’t make it above 2000 degrees without melting the calrods or idiotic glass top. This means slower heat up, slower rebound when adding food to a pan (the death knell for searing), and a longer cooking time (dryer food).

And repeat after me: These things do not just wipe clean. If you’re lucky, you won’t burn the food to the top. And I mean if you’re really lucky. But if you’re not, be prepared to get tennis elbow. And I don’t mean the fun way. If we weren’t going to get rid of the piece of crap electric stove we have now, I’d invest in a freaking angle grinder to get the burned on food off of our “wipe clean” (hah!) cooktop.

If you know AB, you’ll be as upset about this as I am. I haven’t been this disappointend since Bill Nye sold out to Exxon.

Amen to gas stoves versus electric and glass top electric! Another great thing about gas stoves: you can still cook during power outages. Electricity is out and ya can’t watch the tube? Roast some marshmallows and tell ghost stories. It’s especially convenient when it’s bitter cold outside.

Cooking with gas is just better.

O.o
