Close to my homeworld

For those who don’t know, tonight is nearly perfect viewing conditions for Mars, which is at one of its closest approaches in 23,000 years. There’s almost no moon, and Mars is rising at 5:27 pm with astronomical twilight starting at 6:37 PM in my neck of the woods. So you’ve got about four hours of viewing before it gets too late for us old fogeys. It won’t be this close (about 140 light-seconds) again until 2020.

Happy viewing!
